Possible laying methods – Areas of application: patios / balconies

Dry laying in crushed stones bed
Slope: approx. ca. 2%

  • Establish a ground level with slope (2 %) and compact sufficiently.
  • Install the protective layer against frost / bearing layer (15-30 cm, depending on the degree of frequentation) while maintaining the slope.
  • Place a cover permeable to water.
  • Apply a gravel/crushed stones layer ensuring drainage (grain size: 2-4 mm or 2-5 mm), with the same slope as the bearing base; level it, depending on the existing position.
  • Lay the patio tiles with spacer tabs (3 mm joint); if necessary, compact by means of a vibrating machine (low intensity).
      1) AGROB BUCHTAL patio tiles (use spacer tab)
2) Gravel/crushed stones layer ensuring drainage: approx. 5 cm (grain size: 2-4 mm or 2-5 mm)
3) Cover permeable to water
4) Protective layer against frost / bearing layer: approx. 15-30 cm, depending on the degree of frequentation
5) Bearing base (with slope in ground level and drainage, if necessary)

    Laying on drainage mortar
Slope: approx. ca. 2%

  • Establish a ground level with slope (2 %) and compact sufficiently.
  • Install the protective layer against frost / bearing layer (15-30 cm, depending on the degree of frequentation) while maintaining the slope.
  • Place a cover permeable to water.
  • Apply a uniform layer (> 5 cm) of bedding mortar ensuring drainage on the whole surface; level the surface, depending on the position.
  • Apply an appropriate adhesive as adhesive layer / contact layer on the back of the patio tile by using a toothed trowel.
  • Place the patio tiles (slide / tap them in) and lay them with the desired joint width.
A pointing mortar ensuring drainage must be used for pointing. These tiles can also be laid on balconies and terraces above inhabited rooms by using a sealing (according to DIN 18195) and drainage systems.   1) AGROB BUCHTAL patio tiles
2) Adhesive layer / contact layer (e.g. PCI Caraflott NT)
3) Bedding mortar ensuring drainage (≥ 5 cm)
4) Cover permeable to water
5) Protective layer against frost / bearing layer: approx. 15-30 cm, depending on the degree of frequentation
6) Bearing base (with slope in ground level and drainage, if necessary)

    Laying on pedestals
(max. 60 x 60 cm)

Slope: approx. ca. 2%

  • Prepare the base with a slope of 2 %.
  • Install a sealing layer according to DIN 18195 and place a building protective mat.
  • Place and level the pedestals, i.e. one pedestal at every point of intersection. Adjust at the borders. In case of increased load, a central support is required.
  • Lay the patio tiles (use pedestals with integrated spacer tabs).
  • Minimum supporting surface: 44 cm² per corner.
      1) AGROB BUCHTAL patio tiles
2) Pedestal with spacer tab
3) Separation layer / building protective mat
4) Sealing (according to DIN 18195)
5) Bearing base

Possible border design of patio coverings:

For borderings, our range offers products of the series Buchtal Piazza as well as the porcelain stoneware series Valley (cut). Besides these products, conventional borderings such as single rows of granite or edging tiles can also be used for this purpose.

The laying methods shown here are standard versions. Deviating variants may be useful in the case of specific projects.

  • Loosely laid floor coverings in outdoor areas are exposed to the effects of wind pressure and wind suction. Depending on the wind load zone, the suitability of the system must be checked by a professional planner / competent expert, if necessary, in order to avoid the risk of personal and material damage.
  • A ceramic tile laid on a double floor system may break if an object falls down on it from a certain height. Here, there is a risk of injury for all those walking or standing on the tile. If the manufacturer’s laying instructions are not observed, this may lead to injuries of persons.
